My 120 Days Using AI
Working with AI — my thoughts as a recently evolving convert.
For years, I've been genuinely ambivalent about AI. Hearing about mass job displacement and some rather dystopian predictions from industry leaders, I wasn't exactly rushing to embrace it. I found it all rather unsettling.
But I'm building a business now - a solo consultancy. Writing content is something very new for me. Writing is not my strong suit, and having to do it regularly felt intimidating. I needed help. So, rather reluctantly, I gave it a shot.
What surprised me most is how collaborative the experience feels. Currently, my main 2 AI tools are Claude and ChatGPT. I use Claude to help me work through ideas and structure my thoughts. I use ChatGPT when I need ideas for visuals. I'm still learning about writing prompts that result in visuals I like - lol. So for now, I end up comping them up on my own.
But even with the help of AI tools, for me, creating content still takes time. I stay closely involved to make sure the final output genuinely reflects me and what I'm trying to say. AI does the heavy lifting on the parts I struggle with — I work on the direction, the voice, and the judgment.
Is AI a disruptive technology? Absolutely. I don't want to be glib about the fact that real people are being negatively affected. It's still too soon to know the full impact of AI on our society, but it is and will continue to be significant.
I'm finding AI to be a powerful tool that amplifies and enhances my abilities. For me, it feels very similar to when I started using personal computers for graphic design back in the early 90s.
